New Discipline Brings Instant Success

Marie Buchanan TireeTushingham rider Marie Buchanan has stormed to victory at the UK's most famous annual wave sailing competition - the Tiree Wave Classic.

Using a Tushingham Rock 4.7m, Marie used her formidable strength to power out through the whitewater in tricky gusty conditions. This allowed her plenty of time to select the best waves of the heats while her rivals were struggling. It was her first ever wave competition, in a ladies fleet that included National Champion Louise Emery and Student Champion Tanya Saleh. She commented:

Marie Buchanan SUP“I can’t believe I have won a wave competition, especially one as famous as the Tiree Wave Classic! It was hard work as the winds were offshore with big holes between the gusts but the waves were good. Thanks to the organisers and to everyone who has encouraged me to have a go here. The event has been an incredible experience!”

Marie is making fast progress in the waves by combining her ability to handle rig power (from years of racing) with her rapidly developing surfing skills as a SUP rider in the Starboard team. With a winter training programme that will include a month in Australia, she's hoping for further success in the waves in 2010!
